Never before in the history of the United States has a presidential administration issued an order that directly violates the First Amendment to the Constitution. But that’s exactly what President Obama did in January 2012 when his administration mandated that virtually all health plans must cover must cover sterilization, abortifacients, and contraception. The mandate violates the teachings of the Catholic Church as well as other faiths. When the US Catholic Bishops responded by asking a letter to be read to Catholics throughout the nation, the Obama administration intervened and stopped the letter from being read by military chaplains.
If the administration’s decision is not reversed, the Catholic Church will be faced with the terrible decision of eliminating its services to the poor or stop offering health care coverage for its employees. This situation should be troublesome for all people of faith, not just Catholics.
The Declaration of Independence acknowledges that people’s come from God, not the government. Government is made to serve the people, not the other way around. As stated in the Declaration, when the people are faced with despotism, “it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”
Catholic bishops from accross the nation have drawn “the line in the sand” calling for legislation to protect our right of conscience and stating the Catholic Church will not comply with this unjust law. Other faith and civil leaders have joined with the Catholic Bishops in the call for legislation to ensure the protection of our religious liberties under Obamacare. Please join with these leaders in calling for the passage of the “Respect for Rights of Conscience Act” by contacting your lawmakers in Congress.
